🏭 SLB Wins Four Aramco Integrated Well-Construction Contracts Covering 450+ Wells, With Digital and Automated Drilling in the Delivery Model (Saudi Arabia, Sep 24)

The award, not delivered wells: SLB's four new multi-year integrated contracts pair digital workflows and automated drilling with evaluation, fluids, cementing, and completions across a program covering more than 450 wells. For WillCo, the scale of the award suggests digital workflows and automated drilling are moving from isolated deployments into a program-level operating model (WillCo analysis).

Aramco awarded SLB four multi-year integrated well-construction contracts (SLB release, Sep 24, 2026, Reference #1); Drilling Contractor reported the combined program covers more than 450 wells (Reference #2). SLB's delivery model combines digital drilling workflows and automated drilling with evaluation, fluids, cementing, and completions.

The program carries an initial three-year term with an option to extend up to two years. As stated in the SLB release, the scope combines digital drilling workflows and automated drilling with evaluation, fluids, cementing, and completions (Reference #1).

SLB frames the award as consolidating well construction under integrated delivery. The release put no contract value, field split, or efficiency target on record, so this edition reports the program's scale and scope only (WillCo analysis).

The award places digital workflows and automated drilling inside an integrated delivery model covering hundreds of wells. WillCo reads that scale as evidence that these capabilities are moving beyond isolated deployments toward program-level execution. That is the industrialization step the prior editions pointed toward, arriving as a contract rather than a demonstration (WillCo analysis).

For an operator or service company benchmarking against a program like this, the useful question is not whether automated well construction works but what standard of repeatability and data comparability a 450-well award sets. The clause that preserves per-well KPIs and comparable data across the program is the one worth writing (WillCo projection).

🔧 Key Development This Week

🌐 Seven Legs, 13 Days: The Geosteering Question for Dense Pads (WesCan and Bitcap, Alberta, Sep 24-25)

Takeaway (WillCo analysis): the scale being tested here is geometric complexity, not fleet size. A seven-leg multilateral reached total depth in 13 days, putting contextual geosteering to a hard geometric test: WesCan Energy released the rig on Well 105 Provost 15-21-38-3 in the Provost area of east-central Alberta (WesCan, Sep 24, 2026, Reference #3). Drilling Contractor reported that the seven horizontal legs total about 20,200 ft from a single wellbore (converted from the trade report's metric figure; imperial per house style), with total depth reached 13 days after spud and the rig released September 22 (Reference #4).

WesCan reports that the well was drilled within budget with no safety or environmental incidents, and geosteered using Bitcap's Pathfinder system, which WesCan says integrates its 3D seismic interpretation with real-time drilling data (References #3-5; the Pathfinder capability description is vendor-sourced, Reference #5, bitcap.io). The 13-day result and the geosteering contribution are company-reported; no offset-well benchmark isolating the software's contribution was published, so this edition presents the outcome as reported and attributes no specific time saving to the software (WillCo analysis).

Here the scale is geometric, not fleet-wide: seven horizontal legs off one wellbore multiply the number of geosteering decisions and the reservoir contact per surface location. Integrating 3D seismic interpretation with real-time drilling data gives the team a common contextual view as each branch is drilled. A seven-leg multilateral provides a more complex operating context than a single lateral, increasing the importance of maintaining consistent correlations and decision history (WillCo analysis).

So what for you: when you evaluate a geosteering package for complex multilateral or dense pad geometries, ask how it integrates subsurface interpretation with real-time drilling data and how the workflow preserves one model of record, correlations, and decision history as each branch is drilled. The value of consistent contextual interpretation can compound as the number of branches and steering decisions increases.

🔬 Technology on Radar

🎯 A Patent Application Puts a Number on Zeroing Weight on Bit With Machine Learning: Fixing the Measurement Before Scaling the Analytics (Published Sep 24)

Takeaway (WillCo analysis): the scale problem here is data integrity, and it starts at the sensor. A published U.S. patent application puts a hard number on a quiet source of error in drilling optimization: application US20260286831A1, "Zeroing Weight on Bit (WOB) Using Machine Learning" (published Sep 24, 2026; filed Mar 21, 2025; inventors based in the Houston area; text reviewed against the Justia patent-text listing during editing, Reference #6). This is patent-level evidence of a technology direction, not a deployed product or a field result.

The application states that inconsistent manual zeroing of the weight-on-bit measurement "may introduce ±10,000 lbf (pounds of force) of error in the computed WOB," and it ties that error directly to mechanical specific energy (MSE) and rate-of-penetration (ROP) optimization, the analytics operators build on top of the WOB channel. It describes four escalating workflows, from a manual baseline, to manual zeroing with a machine-learning advisory, to automated zeroing with an advisory, to an automated model kept in control with a human override, and references data sampling from about 0.1 Hz to 50 Hz. The application states that accurate WOB information is a top-requested feature for rig operators (Reference #6).

So what for you: the number is the point. If a bias of up to ±10,000 lbf can enter the WOB channel from how it is zeroed, then every MSE and ROP model scaled across a program inherits that bias well by well. Before extending drilling-optimization analytics across hundreds of wells, confirm how WOB is zeroed and how consistent that procedure is rig to rig. A patent application is a direction, not a product, but the failure mode it names is real in the field today (WillCo analysis).

♨️ Geothermal

⚡ First Power at Cape Station: Fervo Reports a Utility-Scale EGS Milestone, Company-Framed (Utah, Sep 24)

Do you run directional or frac crews? An adjacent utility-scale market just reached first power (WillCo analysis). Fervo Energy's Cape Station project in Utah reached first power, with the first of three 33-MW generating units online and exporting electricity, about 33 MW so far and not yet the full Phase I (Fervo and JPT, Sep 24, 2026, References #7-8). Horizontal enhanced geothermal system (EGS) drilling has crossed from pilot to utility-scale operation, and it draws on directional-drilling and multistage-completion skills oilfield crews already have, though qualification for high-temperature geothermal work remains project-specific.

Fervo puts Phase I at approximately 100 MW across three 33-MW units and about 900 MW of contracted offtake. It frames the milestone as the first utility-scale greenfield EGS project to reach first power anywhere in the world, a company-framed claim retained with attribution rather than asserted as an independent finding. Well count, depth, temperature, and drilling-rate figures were not disclosed (References #7-8).

So what for you: EGS borrows horizontal-drilling and multistage-completion techniques from shale, so the directional drillers steering long laterals and the multistage frac crews already on your books provide a transferable capability base for this utility-scale market. Geothermal adds high-temperature, hard-rock, materials, and tool-reliability constraints, so the crossover is a qualification step, not a simple crew reassignment. The next step is to map those capabilities and the added constraints against EGS demand, and decide whether to pursue the crossover (WillCo analysis).

🌱 CCUS Well Construction

♻️ First Carbon-Storage Well: Zefiro Redeploys a Plugging Crew (Plants & Goodwin, Indiana, Sep 22)

Takeaway (WillCo analysis): a proven crew and rig can provide a transferable starting point for an adjacent well-construction market, but qualification remains project- and regulatory-specific. Zefiro's subsidiary Plants & Goodwin began drilling the company's first carbon-dioxide storage well in eastern Indiana, an eight-week project, applying the same crews, rigs, and downhole expertise the subsidiary runs for well plugging and abandonment (Zefiro and Drilling Contractor, Sep 22, 2026, References #9-10). Well-design and storage-integrity details were not disclosed, so this stays a capability-transfer item with no storage-integrity specifics inferred (WillCo analysis).

So what for you: the plug-and-abandonment crew that already sets cement plugs, runs wireline, and manages downhole zonal isolation has a transferable capability base for carbon-storage well construction, which leans on those same skills to seal and isolate a target zone. Storage wells also add project-specific regulatory, cementing, metallurgy and corrosion, injectivity, integrity, and monitoring requirements, so the crossover is a qualification step, not a straight reassignment. Audit your own crews and rigs for the adjacent markets they are positioned to serve (WillCo analysis).

🧭 WillCo Perspective: The Engineering Behind Drilling Automation at Scale

At scale, repeatability matters more than feature count (WillCo analysis). Read the week as one thesis in several settings: a 450+-well program applies an integrated delivery model that includes digital workflows and automated drilling, a small operator pushes contextual geosteering across a seven-leg geometry, a geothermal developer runs transferred horizontal-drilling capability at utility-scale power, and a plugging specialist redeploys its crews into carbon storage. None is a new gadget; each is an existing capability asked to hold up at volume.

A program fails by drift: the same nominal workflow produces subtly non-comparable wells until the dataset that was supposed to justify the industrial bet can no longer prove that well 450 is better than well 1. That comparability is the one advantage scale was meant to buy, and it erodes quietly if every well is run "about the same" rather than verifiably the same. The discipline the moment calls for is unglamorous: define what "the same" means across a program, the same measurement zeroing, the same geosteering model of record, the same completion workflow, and build the audit trail that proves each well was actually run that way.

Pilots prove capability. Scale proves discipline.

✅ Practical Recommendations

  • 🔍 Contract for comparability, not just capability (integrated programs): require per-well KPI reporting and a defined data standard so wells stay comparable across the program (WillCo projection).

  • 🧭 Match the geosteering architecture to the geometry: for complex multilateral or dense pad work, ask how it integrates subsurface interpretation with real-time drilling data and how the workflow preserves one model of record, correlations, and decision history as each branch is drilled, as in the WesCan and Bitcap seven-leg well.

  • 🧮 Fix the base measurements before scaling the analytics (data integrity): before extending rate-of-penetration or mechanical-specific-energy optimization across a program, confirm how weight on bit is zeroed and how consistent that is well to well. A machine-learning weight-on-bit zeroing patent application (US20260286831A1; see Technology on Radar) puts the potential zeroing error at up to ±10,000 lbf, a reminder that a bias at the source silently invalidates the optimization built on top of it (WillCo analysis).

  • ♻️ Look for adjacent markets your crews already fit: a proven rig, crew, and skill base provide a transferable base for an adjacent well-construction market, as Zefiro did by moving plugging crews into carbon storage, though qualification for EGS or CO2-storage work remains project- and regulatory-specific (WillCo analysis).

🔭 What We're Watching Next

  • AI4Energy Americas 2026 (Houston, September 28-29, 2026), an SPE Data Science and Engineering Analytics event on moving AI beyond proof of concept toward fleet-scale deployment, ROI, data readiness, and governance (Reference #11). It runs this week; WillCo will report attributable conclusions once the sessions produce them, not the agenda.

  • Execution detail behind the SLB and Aramco program: how the more-than-450-well scope is phased, and whether any per-well performance or data-comparability standard becomes public. WillCo will report on results, not on the award.

  • Fervo Cape Station commercial operation. First power on the first 33-MW unit is the milestone reported; the ramp to the full approximately 100-MW Phase I across the three 33-MW units, and toward the disclosed 900-MW offtake, is what to watch next.

  • Data security as drilling scales. On September 24, 2026 the Texas Railroad Commission warned oil and gas operators broadly of growing cyber threats to internet-facing operational-technology systems, citing two August tanker cyberattacks and recommending AI in cyber defense; it does not name drilling rigs (Railroad Commission of Texas primary notice, Commissioner Wayne Christian, Sep 24, 2026, Reference #12). As automated well construction scales onto more connected rigs, the operational-technology attack surface scales with it (WillCo analysis).

  • Whether machine-learning weight-on-bit zeroing moves from patent to product. The application is verified at patent level (US20260286831A1; see Technology on Radar), but no commercial deployment or field result is disclosed; a shipped, operator-validated implementation is what would turn this from a technology direction into a development to report (Reference #6).
