🛢️ Top Story
TotalEnergies Commits to 15 Years of Digital Well Planning at Portfolio Scale

On October 8, 2026, SLB announced a 15-year agreement with TotalEnergies to use the DrillPlan coherent well planning and engineering solutions across TotalEnergies' global upstream portfolio. SLB states that the agreement will support TotalEnergies' transition to a digital planning environment, connecting subsurface insights with well planning and engineering, and supporting a standardized digital drilling planning environment. Trade coverage reports the same terms.
According to SLB, the environment integrates offset well data, trajectory designs, casing and completion inputs, and planning assumptions, so that cross-functional teams work from a common foundation of data, plans, and assumptions, and it is designed to connect workflows, integrate custom processes, and scale across operations. SLB Digital president Rakesh Jaggi framed the demand as operators looking for scalable technologies that support more consistent planning decisions across large and diverse portfolios. The release attaches no contract value, well count, or savings figure; the signal is the term itself.
Why the term matters: a 15-year horizon is long enough for the planning environment to become part of the operating model rather than a short-lived deployment or a parallel system beside existing tools (WillCo analysis).
For operators and service companies, the practical implication is data readiness. Trajectory, casing, and offset-well data that lives only in asset-level spreadsheets is harder to bring into any shared planning environment, so it is worth knowing which of your planning inputs can already be exported in structured form (WillCo analysis).

🤖 Rig Automation
ExxonMobil and H&P Plan to Take FlexRobotics From 2 Systems to 9 Within 12 Months
On October 7, 2026, H&P and ExxonMobil announced the successful deployment of the first two FlexRobotics systems on H&P rigs, and H&P said it expects to deploy seven additional systems for ExxonMobil over the next 12 months, bringing the total in operation to nine.
FlexRobotics automates repetitive rig-floor activities. H&P describes the aim as reducing personnel exposure to higher-risk tasks while improving consistency, precision, and operational efficiency.

The release does not say which rig-floor tasks the system takes over on a given rig, and it publishes no crew or performance figures. Operators and contractors evaluating rig-floor automation can ask that scope question directly, for example whether it covers pipe handling, connections, or tubular running. Those are examples to clarify scope, not claims about what this system does (WillCo analysis).
What makes this a scale story rather than a product story is the planned ramp. Moving from two systems to nine in a year means the supporting pieces, training, maintenance, and the drill-floor procedures around an automated system, have to be stood up at that scale as well (WillCo analysis).
📐 Data Integrity
Aramco and SLB Report an Automated Platform for Wellbore Survey QC (late-window, GOTECH 2026)
Presented at GOTECH 2026 in Dubai (Sep 29 to Oct 1, 2026), just ahead of this week's news window, and included for its direct bearing on the portfolio-scale theme.
In SPE-232038-MS, "Automated Platform Solution Standardizes Wellbore Surveying and Improves Positional Accuracy," Victor Oliveira and Abdullah Al-Dossary of Aramco, with Ahmed Osman and Mahmoud ElGizawy of SLB, describe an automated platform that performs survey quality control, survey correction, and error-model assignment. According to the abstract, the platform reads survey data and raw axis measurements through the WITSML protocol, checks every survey against Field Acceptance Criteria (FAC) for gravity, magnetic field, and magnetic dip tolerances along with survey-interval checks, flags failing surveys, and works with data from different service providers.
The abstract reports the following, as stated by the authors:
Over 180 wells processed, with the platform stress tested to over 50 wells at a time while maintained by a single person.
Approximately 426 BHA runs reviewed, with areas for enhancement highlighted in 58% of cases.
26% of cases flagged as needing fine-tuning to meet the ideal 100-ft survey interval.
2% of delivered surveys found uncorrectable because of wrong references or missing data.
After corrections, well positions shifting by an average of 10 ft, and error models improvable by around 20%, to allow more in-fill well placement.
The figures come from the paper's abstract, with SLB as the platform provider.

Why it matters for portfolio-scale planning: a shared planning environment is only as reliable as the survey data that feeds it. On one well, a skilled reviewer can catch a bad survey by hand. Across hundreds of wells, the same check has to be repeatable and applied the same way every time, which is what an automated QC gate is designed to do (WillCo analysis).
A practical question for any operator: which error model is applied to each survey tool, against which acceptance criteria, and can the pass or fail record be produced automatically for every well rather than on request? Survey accuracy is assessed against the industry error models maintained by the ISCWSA (WillCo analysis).
🧭 Engineering Perspective
At Scale, Engineering Accountability Stays Human
In SPE's The Way Ahead, the article "Engineering the Path: AI-Driven Well Design and Planning" (Oct 7, 2026) sets out how AI planning tools should sit inside the well-design workflow. The authors argue that AI planning agents should be viewed as decision-support capabilities rather than autonomous planning systems, and that engineers remain responsible for defining objectives, validating assumptions, assessing risks, and approving final designs.
Hard engineering constraints, dogleg severity, anti-collision separation, casing-setting-depth windows, and steering-assembly build and turn rates, are treated as firm boundaries the tool must plan within.
Why it matters this week: when planning moves into a standardized environment across many assets and AI drafts plans faster, what keeps each plan trustworthy is that the engineering constraints stay firm and engineers retain final approval (WillCo analysis). A practical step, offered as WillCo's suggestion rather than the authors': when evaluating an AI planning tool, confirm how approval and accountability are recorded, and that hard constraints are enforced as hard stops rather than suggestions (WillCo analysis).
🧭 On WillCo's Radar
The signal worth watching is convergence: personnel-safety monitoring and rig-floor automation are approaching the same goal, reducing personnel exposure on the drill floor, from two directions (WillCo analysis). On October 8, 2026, Salunda reported 4 new 2026 patent grants, bringing its Red Zone monitoring portfolio to 33 patent rights across 5 families and 9 jurisdictions, and reports company-wide deployments on more than 100 assets worldwide. A growing patent portfolio signals commercial intent and competitive positioning; the measured safety outcome is what will move it off the radar and into the lead.
🧭 WillCo Perspective: Scale Is a Commitment, Not a Demonstration
The developments in this edition share one pattern.
The survey-QC paper speaks to the data foundation a portfolio commitment rests on; the SPE perspective speaks to the governance that keeps it honest (WillCo analysis).
A pilot can depend heavily on a skilled team, local workarounds, and informal judgment; portfolio deployment requires those dependencies to be made explicit. The four cards below are that checklist, and the recommendations that follow apply it (WillCo analysis).
The useful question is not only "which capability should we pilot next." It is "which capability are we ready to run across many wells or rigs, and what would we have to make explicit to get there."

✅ Practical Recommendations
For operators and service companies: take one capability proven on a well or two and list what would have to become explicit to run it across many.
🗂️ Data foundation: check whether offset-well data, trajectories, casing and completion inputs, and survey data are consistent and structured enough across assets to plan from one shared source, or whether each asset still plans from its own files (WillCo analysis).
📐 Engineering constraints: encode hard limits, dogleg severity, anti-collision, casing-setting windows, steering limits, as firm boundaries any planning tool must respect, not individual memory (WillCo analysis).
✅ Deployment governance: define who approves each plan and how accountability is recorded before scaling, so speed never outruns approval (WillCo analysis).
🚦 Exception management: decide what happens when a well falls outside the model, so the override is a defined, logged, reviewed path rather than an improvisation (WillCo analysis).
🔭 What We're Watching Next
